Abstract
Problem: Research shows that Norwegian adolescents’ sexual habits have changed in recent years. I wish to increase the knowledge of how young people understand their sexuality and how sexuality affects identity development.
Method: The data were collected from the website www.klara-klok.no, under "sexual orientation". Klara Klok is a website where young people aged 10 - 30 years are invited to ask questions about things they wonder about sexuality. They are replied from qualified professionals. 310 questions were collected and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively by using content analysis and thematic analysis. The main emphasis is put on the thematic analysis.
Results: The content analysis showed that the adolescents’ main concern was if they could be gay, bisexual or lesbian, and that many expressed fear and anxiety regarding this. The thematic analysis identified four main themes: "heteronormativity," "attraction and exploration," "scared" and "sex and love."
Discussion: Teenagers' understanding of their sexuality and sexual orientation are discussed in light of the content analysis and the four main themes of the thematic analysis. I found that many adolescents convey that they live in a heteronormative environment that encourages them to be heterosexual. This creates distress in those who experience homoerotic impulses and feelings. The boys were more concerned than the girls about the possibility of a non-heterosexual orientation, and tended to define themselves as either heterosexual or homosexual. The girls conveyed a more plastic and fluid attitude towards their sexuality. Some adolescents also engaged in same-sex behavior, without necessarily defining themselves as non-heterosexuals. Some youngsters also appeared to perceive sex as separate from love. Overall, the study showed that sexuality is a strong factor in young people's identity development, and that group affiliation is more important than individual identity at this age. Counsellors who work with adolescents are advised to be open to young people's concerns about their sexuality and not adopt a heteronormative attitude.
