dc.description.abstract | Sammendrag
| nor |
dc.description.abstract | Summary
The thesis is based on a fieldwork conducted in the Central Mexican indigenous community Misión de Chichimecas, and took place during the period from January to July 2008. Based on the relationship between past and present, continuity and change, I seek to give an insight into how ethnicity is negotiated among the inhabitants of the community. In addition I aim to chart the causes and motives which constitute the basis for the preservation of Mexico’s last chichimeca community.
On the basis of place of belonging, fight for territories, language, myths, dance and music, I present the various elements that each in their own way are relevant in the ongoing negotiations around a chichimeca-identity. Relationships within the community will appear in a close pair with outer circumstances and external actors, mainly described as mestizos and state-employees. Reports about the relationship between chichimecas and mestizos sheds light on ethnic groups relational and context-dependent nature, where interaction and social interface are good analytical starting points. Moreover, I assert that the sustention of the Chichimeca-Jonáz ethnic group rests on the fact that a majority of both members and non-members consider the category beneficial. Underlying models would otherwise emanate from various other motives. Material goods, the preservation of social positions and power relations, personal foundation and sense of belonging are all factors that provide an understanding of the group's survival in time and negotiation about ethnic identity. Instrumentalism (deliberate strategies) and primordialism (a reflection on something naturally and emotionally rooted) figure as complementary and alternate ideas in my informants approach to their own and others' ethnic identity. The perspectives can work to the advantage and disadvantage for both the chichimecas and mestizos, but on the basis of the field, I believe to recognize a dominant tendency for ethnic categories to be used as justifying circumstances for social inequalities. | eng |
