Gambling with labor : labor relations in the South African casino resort industry

Abstract

I desember 2009 gikk fagforeningen South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union til streik mot casinogiganten Sun International i Sør Afrika. Denne oppgaven analyserer fagforeningens strategi og bruk av geografiske nivå i sin kamp for bedre lønn og arbeidsvilkår ved å se på hvordan streiken utspilte seg ved to forskjellige casino.

Oppgaven utforsker fagforeningens handlekraft i et kapitalistisk demokrati, og hvordan geografiske og historiske forskjeller påvirker fagforeningens strategier. I tillegg tar oppgaven for seg hvordan store internasjonale arrangement ("mega events") påvirker fagforeningens muligheter til å vinne frem sine krav i forhandling med bedriften.

In December 2009 the trade union South African Caommercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union initiated an industrial action against the South African casino giant Sun International. This thesis analyzes the trade union's strategy and use of geographical scales when fighting for better wages and working conditions by looking at how the industrial action played out at two different casino resorts.

The thesis further explores the trade union's agency in a capitalist deocracy and the influences that geographical and historical differences have on the trade union's strategies. Also, the thesis investigates how international mega events affect the trade union's chances of winning through in negotiations with the company.
