This review paper aims to provide an overview of the impact of dental implant surfaces on the development of peri-implantitis. Now exist a significant diversity of endosseous dental implants with various surface characteristics. Many methods and modifications of the implant surfaces have been developed to improve osseointegration, for reduction of bacteria-related infections that cause peri-implantitis, and extension of implants lifetime .While laboratory in vitro and in vivo research demonstrates promising results of implants with modified surfaces, long-term clinical observations are few and show controversial results .This study uses relevant full-text articles in the English language, reviewed in PubMed, and includes a systematic review and meta-analysis articles. The result of this study indicates the necessity of long-term clinical observations of peri-implantitis to clarify implant surface role in this issue.eng
