Abstract
In this thesis, the zone of the untouchable is examined in relation to economics through the research question: "In what way does the zone of the untouchable come into play in discussions about economics?" The zone of the untouchable is an interesting and intricate term that can be explained as a type of intimate zone for the soul or our inner self, where there is a risk of violating a person's integrity. The purpose of this assignment is to explore some of the situations where this can occur. The assignment is relevant for anyone working closely with people, especially those who live with poor economic conditions. To gather data, a qualitative method with five semi-structured interviews was conducted. The thematic analysis and discussion of three perspectives on the zone of the untouchable demonstrate how it comes into play through “emotional reserve”, “recognition”, and “the will to live”. The informants share powerful stories about events where they lost their emotional reserve and experienced feelings of “bluferdighet” and shame, or how the lack of money has prevented them from living authentic lives in community with others. Some informants avoid coping with their poor economic situation and have at times lost much of their will to live, while others hold onto the dream of possibly winning the lottery in the future. Further research is necessary to explore how conversation partners should address these topics and consider how a conversation service for people with poor economic conditions could look like and be made accessible to those in need or desire of it.
