| dc.description.abstract | The goal of this thesis is to analyse the regional evidence for the Italic Mars in Umbria and Latium, and provide a contrast to the older studies of Mars through the use of new theories of polytheism, epithets and translation of gods, art history, identity and ethnicity, epigraphy, linguistics and new archaeological evidence. The Iguvine Tables is one of the main areas of analysis, where both the so-called Martius triad and Grabovian triad are explored. Through this work it is possible to interpret Mars through the eyes of the ancient Iguvines and the context of the Iguvine Tables. Gods like Mars Grabovius, Serfus Martius, Tursa Serfia of Serfus Martius, Tursa Jovia, Prestota Serfia of Serfus Martius and more obscure entities like Ahtus Mars, Picus Martius and Mars Hodius will be analysed and interpreted. In Latium it is the inscriptions on the votive columns of M. Furius from Tusculum, the Lapis Satricanum from Satricum, combined with two cista, among them the enigmatic Colombella cista, from Praeneste, and the context these provide, which informs the analysis of Mars. Through these it is possible to see some of the associations and meanings attributed to Mars beyond the Roman influence and context. | eng |
