Abstract
This master's thesis examines whether people's/society's attitudes to gender are reflected in the music we listen to and in the music videos we watch. Using a combination of different methods, I will examine selected artists' treatment of gender in song lyrics and in music videos based on three case studies, including "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)" by Lil Nas X, "The Man" by Taylor Swift, and "Et Par Rolig Shots Med Gutta" by Vidar Villa. I will also study the songs' reception in the press and among the public. It is common among pop artists and artists in general to write songs that are about something personal. This can be personal experiences in love, it can deal with family, and it can deal with politics. The undertone of any song will have some kind of meaning: positive or negative - and this underpins the lyrics. Many researchers agree that the artist writes a song with a message, but that it is the listener who puts meaning into the song. Findings made in the analyzes of the song examples show that attitudes towards gender are clearly shown, regardless of whether it is intentional or not, and can further help to inspire new music – in addition to new attitudes.
