Utenforskap, innenforskap og alternative kameratskap

Abstract

Denne oppgaven undersøker hvordan maskulinitet og vennskap navigeres i flerkulturelle områder på Østkanten i Oslo. Oppgaven tar utgangspunkt i elleve semistrukturerte intervjuer med gutter oppvokst på Østkanten mellom 18 og 28 år. I en narrativ analyse fremheves fortellinger knyttet til hverdagsrasisme, stigmatisering og ekskludering, men også vennskap, samhold og inkludering. Med et utgangspunkt i teorier om strukturell maskulinitet, og begrepsparet mannlighet/umannlighet, utforskes ulike maskuline håndteringer av identitet og tilhørighet i dreiningspunktet mellom utenforskap og innenforskap. Videre nyanseres de sosiale strukturene som identitetene og vennskapene manøvreres innenfor, ved bruk av andre teoretiske verktøy og begreper koblet til flerkulturelle identiteter; rasisme og stigmatisering; motstand, og alternative identiteter, diskurser og fellesskap. Oppgaven er delt inn i tre analysekapitler. Det første analysekapittelet tar for seg hvordan guttene beskriver og tar i bruk en “utlending”-identitet som viser til et stedbundet fellesskap, definert i kontrast til forestillingen av “det norske”. I det andre kapittelet belyses guttenes erfaringer med stigma og hverdagsrasisme, koblet til stereotypier av “farlige utlendinger”, men også dikotomiske håndteringer, som både bygger under og arbeider imot stereotypiene. Til slutt undersøkes det, i analysekapittel tre, hvordan vennskapsrelasjoner og intimitet, i et miljø preget av tradisjonell maskulinitet, mistillit og humor, både begrenser og åpner for ulike navigeringer av vennskap og maskuline identiteter. Oppgaven konkluderer med at guttenes maskuline identiteter, tilhørighet og fellesskap virker å skapes i omdreiningspunktet mellom utenforskap og innenforskap, hovedsakelig knyttet til det nasjonale og det lokale fellesskapet.

This study analyzes how masculinity and friendship is navigated in multicultural areas in the Eastside in Oslo. The study is based on eleven semi-structured interviews with boys raised on the Eastside, between the ages of 18 and 28. In a narrative analysis, both narratives related to everyday racism, stigmatization and exclusion; and also stories of friendship, togetherness and inclusion, are highlighted. By using theories of structural masculinities, and the binary relation between manliness/unmanliness, I explore different masculine ways of handling identity and belonging, in the pivot point of “outsideness” and “insideness”. Furthermore, the social structures within which identities and friendships maneuver, are nuanced using other theoretical tools and concepts connected to multicultural identities; racism and stigmatization; resistance, and alternative identities, discourses and community. The thesis is divided into three chapters of analysis. In the first chapter of analysis I discuss how the boys describe and use a “foreigner” identity that refers to a place-bound community, defined in contrast to the notion of “the Norwegian”. In the second chapter the boys’ experiences with stigma and everyday racism are highlighted, linked to stereotypes of “dangerous foreigners”, but also dichotomous handling, which both underpins and works against the stereotypes. Finally, in analysis chapter three, it is examined how friendships and intimacy, in an environment characterized by traditional masculinity, mistrust and humor, both limit and open up different navigation of friendship and masculine identities. The thesis concludes that the boys' masculine identities, belonging and community, seem to be created in the turning point between outsideness and insideness, mainly linked to national and local community.
